MILK AND HONEY
Our favorite book of the moment is Justin Van Hoy’s beautifully curated “Milk and Honey: Contemporary Art in California,” highlighting new work by contemporary artists (including quite a few Giant Artists) who are aesthetically and regionally joined through a variety of mediums and demographics. By showcasing unknown and emerging artists alongside established icons who all call California home, “Milk and Honey” recognizes the fact that region and lifestyle directly influence the working process and ultimately the state of contemporary imagery.
Artists include: Ed Ruscha, Cali Thornhill De Witt, Erin Garcia, Chris Burden, Dan Monick, Hassan Rahim, Joey Gallagher, Jared Eberhardt, Steven Harrington, Chris Duncan, RJ Shaughnessy, Pearl C. Hsiung, Harper Smith, Richard Colman, Emily Shur, Christopher Bettig, Barry McGee, Shelley Leopold, Aaron Farley, Sage Vaughn, Ye Rin Mok, Megan Whitmarsh, Florencio Zavala, Mel Kadel, Kevin Earl Taylor, Robert Therrien, Ashley Snow Macomber, Andrew Schoultz, Lucy Rose, Kelsey Brookes, G. JEREMY & CLAIRE WEISS- FEATURE SHOOT
Lovely piece on FeatureShoot.com about Jeremy & Claire’s award-winning Nightswimming story:
“The photograph reflects, every streetlight a reminder. Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.” These lyrics, from R.E.M.’s “Nightswimming” played a major part in Jeremy and Claire Weiss’ spread for Monster Children magazine. The husband and wife power duo who make up the photography team Day 19, borrowed a friend’s pool off the grid, in the hills of Malibu to really capture what it’s like to swim at night. “I just thought it would be rad to shoot a story based around the feeling of swimming at night but to try and capture what the light actually feels like when you are doing it,” said Jeremy Weiss. The team only used ambient light from the pool and a string of lights on the deck, no flash or strobes to mimic the water reflections. This series was recently chosen to be part of Photo District News’ 2012 Photo Annual.
